What perfectionism can look

and feel like

Nothing you complete feels done. You finish the project, send the email, host the dinner, and instead of relief, you're already replaying what could've been better. The bar moves the moment you get close to it.

It's not only pressure you put on yourself. A lot of it is pressure to be seen as perfect by other people, so you present the polished version and edit out the parts that might make you look like you're struggling or falling short. That can mean staying quiet about what's actually hard, or avoiding situations where someone might see you unprepared, uncertain, or less than put-together.

It shows up as:

  • Rewriting or redoing something several times past the point where it actually mattered

  • Fixating on the one flaw in something that otherwise went well

  • Putting things off entirely because starting imperfectly feels worse than not starting at all

  • Struggling to hand tasks to anyone else because you're convinced they won't do it "right"

  • Censoring what you share with others so they only see the version of you that has it together

  • Avoiding vulnerability, even with people close to you, because being seen struggling feels riskier than staying composed

  • Harsh, specific self-criticism that friends or a partner would never say out loud to you

Why it's exhausting: the standard keeps moving, so there's no finish line where you actually get to feel done and rest, and maintaining the appearance of having it together takes its own kind of energy.

What people pleasing can look

and feel like

You know what someone else needs from a conversation before you know what you actually think. You say yes when you mean no, and quietly resent it after.

It shows up as:

  • Agreeing to plans, favors, or requests you didn't actually want, and figuring out how you feel about it later

  • Apologizing for things that weren't your fault, or apologizing preemptively before anyone's upset

  • Reading a room's mood shift before you've registered your own

  • Avoiding disagreement even when you have a clear opinion, because the conflict feels riskier than staying quiet

  • Resentment that builds slowly and quietly, often without the other person ever knowing it's there

  • Putting others' needs before your own, at the expense of your own mental health or happiness

  • The thought of someone being upset with you feeling excruciating

Why it's exhausting: you're running a constant background calculation of what everyone else needs, which leaves very little left over for what you need.

Perfectionism sets an impossible internal bar; people-pleasing sets an impossible external one, based on what you think others expect.

At Tri Lotus Psychotherapy, we offer Perfectionism and People Pleasing therapy to help you build a life where your worth isn't tied to your last performance, ask for what you need without guilt, and hold boundaries without losing the relationships that matter to you. You don't have to give up your drive or your care for other people to get there, just the belief that either one has to come at the cost of your own well-being.

Frequently asked questions

What is people-pleasing therapy, and how can it help?

People-pleasing therapy helps you understand why you tend to put others first. It teaches you how to set healthy boundaries, say no without guilt, and express your needs clearly. A people-pleasing therapist supports you in building confidence, reducing anxiety, and prioritizing your needs too, so you can create more balanced, respectful relationships - both with yourself and others.
How does therapy for perfectionism work?

Therapy for perfectionism focuses on helping you reduce the pressure to be perfect and find balance between achievement and caring for yourself. You learn to detach from unhelpful thoughts, accept mistakes, set realistic goals, and heal any past wounds that may have contributed to perfectionist tendencies . Over time, therapy helps you feel less stressed and more confident, allowing you to focus on progress instead of perfection.

Who can benefit from perfectionism therapy in Calgary?

Perfectionism therapy in Calgary can help students, professionals, and anyone who feels overwhelmed by high expectations. If you fear making mistakes, avoid tasks, or feel burnt out, therapy can help. It teaches you how to manage stress, build self-compassion, and find a healthier balance in daily life.
Is people-pleasing a form of perfectionism?

They are both connected. People-pleasing and perfectionism often stem from the belief that your worth depends on what you do, what you produce, or how others see you. Perfectionism drives you to get it right; people pleasing drives you to keep others happy. Together, they can leave you exhausted, disconnected from your own needs, and afraid that simply being yourself isn't enough. Both are learned patterns, which means they can be unlearned with support from a therapist proficient in helping clients overcome perfectionism or people-pleasing.

How do I know if I need a people-pleasing therapist?
If you find it difficult to say no, are afraid of disappointing others, or feel that it is your responsibility to make everyone happy, you may need to search for “therapy for perfectionism near me” or “people-pleasing therapy near me.” Therapy for perfectionism and people-pleasing therapy can help you set boundaries, speak up, and value your own needs. This leads to healthier relationships and better emotional well-being.
