The fall leaves are fallin' and winter is on its way, Calgary. Let's talk about winter, mental health, and how to make the most of it (or at least minimize our suffering).
Managing Stress During Calgary’s Harsh Winters
Winter in Calgary isn’t just about cozying up by the fireplace and sipping hot chocolate (though that helps!). With freezing temperatures, shorter days, and sometimes gloomy skies, it's easy to feel weighed down. Many Albertans struggle with the winter blues—or, for some, more seriously, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Let's talk about why this happens and, most importantly, how you can manage it!
What is Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)?
SAD is a type of depression that typically occurs during the winter months, when daylight hours are shorter. People often feel more tired, less motivated, and may experience mood swings or even mild depression. For those living in Alberta, where winters can be especially long and harsh, this is a common challenge.
How Calgary Winters Affect Mental Health
The lack of sunlight can impact our body’s natural rhythms. This disruption can lead to changes in our mood, sleep patterns, and energy levels. Combine that with the stress of shovelling snow, scraping ice off your car (again), and navigating icy roads, and you’ve got a recipe for winter stress.
Coping Strategies for Winter Stress in Calgary
Here are some ways to keep your mental health in check during Calgary’s cold months:
1. Get as much sunlight as possible
Even if it’s -20°C, try to soak up daylight. A short walk during lunchtime can make a difference. If the sun isn’t an option, light therapy lamps can help mimic natural sunlight and boost your mood.
2. Stay Active
When it’s freezing outside, it’s tempting to stay indoors, but staying active is essential for mental health. Calgary has plenty of indoor activities—whether it’s hitting the gym, trying indoor rock climbing, playing tactical laser tag, or even doing some yoga at home. Physical activity boosts endorphins, which help fight stress. These endorphins can also help improve your sleep.
3. Embrace Winter Activities
Why not make the most of what winter has to offer? Calgary has tons of outdoor activities that can actually help you enjoy the season—ice skating, skiing, snowshoeing, or even just a winter hike in Fish Creek Park. These activities not only get you outside but also provide a mental health boost.
4. Practice Mindfulness and Relaxation
Mindfulness exercises like meditation or deep breathing can help you stay grounded during stressful moments. It’s a great way to manage the winter blues and find some peace amidst the cold. Insight Timer, Headspace, or Calm are 3 great meditation apps that offer beginner guided meditations.
Schedule time for self-care activities weekly. Be reasonable with your expectations for self and get creative with ways to incorporate activities that allow you to feel joy, at peace, or a sense of calm.
5. Connect with Others
Winter can sometimes make us feel isolated, especially when the snow makes leaving the house feel like an ordeal. Make an effort to stay connected with friends and family. Whether it's a virtual hangout, trying a new restaurant, or an in-person coffee, social support is key for mental health.
6. Consider Professional Help
If you’re feeling overwhelmed or suspect you’re dealing with SAD, don’t hesitate to reach out to a professional. As a Calgary-based psychologist, I can help guide you through these tough months with personalized strategies. There are many mental health resources in Alberta that can make winter a bit more manageable.
Winter is a great time to start counselling, as there is typically less distractions from the exceptional weather and summer vacations. Maybe the cold weather can be that push to type into google, psychologist near me.
Final Thoughts
Calgary’s winters are no joke, but that doesn’t mean you have to suffer through them alone. By taking proactive steps and being mindful of your mental health, you can reduce the impact of winter stress. Whether it’s getting outside for some fresh air, staying connected, or seeking support, there are many ways to thrive—even when it’s freezing outside.
